End-of-Life Choice - VOLUNTARY EUTHANASIA SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND INC

Andrew Denton and "The Damage Done"

08 Aug 2016 12:37 PM | Philip Patston (Administrator)

Death With Dignity NSW has been asked by Andrew Denton and his team to forward their sincere thanks to the hundreds of individuals and families who responded to their call and forwarded personal testimonies reflecting the impact of a "bad death".  According to Denton, the truth of the suffering caused in the absence of safe assisted dying law is deeply moving. Shocking.

It is a truth which Denton has documented in a book he has entitled "The Damage Done" . It is a collection of 73 testimonies from patients and families, doctors, nurses and coroners, describing the suffering across Australia created by the absence of a law for voluntary assisted dying. Written by contributors aged from 14 to 100 years, these testimonies ask serious questions of our society - How much longer can we allow this damage to continue? And who amongst our politicians has the courage to address it?

Denton is thrilled that the great response enabled them to meet the extremely tight publishing deadline for the book, which he will launch in Canberra at the National Press Club Address Wednesday August 10 at 12.30 pm to 1.30 pm. Denton's televised lunchtime address on this day will enlighten leading journalists and politicians about 'The Damage Done - The price our community pays without a law for assisted dying'.

For those of us who cannot get to Canberra next Wednesday, please ensure you are able to watch it live on Television on ABC1 or ABC News 24 from 12.30 pm. For those who prefer to use their computer, it will also be streamed live on-line (click here for ABC News 24 on-line) and be available to watch until the 24 August on ABC iview (click here for iview)

The book The Damage Done with be available as a free on-line eCopy after Denton's address on August 10. DWD NSW will put a link to the book on our website after the NPC address. Hard copies of the book will be provided by Denton to journalists, politicians and contributors whose personal stories appear in the book.
