15 of new Australian Senate pro-voluntary euthanasia

08 Aug 2016 12:31 PM | Philip Patston (Administrator)

The Composition of the Senate is finally released.

Over thirty days after the federal election, the full Senate list has finally been released. Membership by political party is as follows: Liberal/National 30; Labor 26; The Greens 9; One Nation 4; Nick Xenophon Team 3; Liberal Democratic 1; Derryn Hinch Justice 1, Family First 1 and Jacqui Lambie Network 1.

Of these Senators, 15 are from a party with a stated policy of support for voluntary assisted dying (The Greens, One Nation, Liberal Democrats and Derryn Hinch Justice Party) and 1 has a stated policy of opposition (Family First Party). It remains to be seen what the position on voluntary assisted dying of the other 60 Senators will be, especially if the major parties give their members a 'conscience vote' on a federal bill.

The first sitting day of the 45th Australian Parliament (House of Representatives and Senate) will be Tuesday 30 August 2016. Click for more details of the federal election results.
